Joanie completed her Teacher Training program in 2005 at Avalon Yoga Center in Palo Alto studying under John Berg. She has since trained with Max Strom, Desiree Rambaugh, Les Leventhal, and others to enhance her teaching and personal practice.

Through her love of yoga and desire to help others obtain maximum well being, Joanie became interested in the healing arts. She is a BodyTalk practitioner (an energy based healing modality), trained at the highest level of the system. She has also studied Reiki, Sound Healing, and Healing Touch. The sensitivity and awareness brought about by her healing practice has augmented her yoga practice and teaching abilities. Her classes offer a welcoming environment that encourages a conscious experience. Allowing the space for the student to create a relationship with body and spirit while deepening awareness of Self.

Susannah

SUSANNAH

Wednesday 7:30 pm - Slow Flow
Thursday 12 noon - "Power Lunch"

Susannah first discovered yoga in 1993 at Yoga College of India (Bikram) in San Francisco during her first year of law school. Since 1998, however, her practice has mainly been Vinyasa yoga, but with an Iyengar-based focus on alignment, primarily as a result of study with Kent Bond, both privately and as a student at Willow Glen Yoga. She also studied Ashtanga and "Power" yoga before realizing that often strength, as well as peace, can come from slowing down and moving more deeply into one's practice. After an 8 year career as a public defender, Susannah changed paths and became a Yoga Alliance certified yoga instructor through Avalon in Palo Alto. She wants each student to find the joy and peace that yoga has brought to her, and strives to do this with her own blend of knowledge, compassion, music and, of course, humor.

Styles of Yoga - Iyengar, Ashtanga, Vinyasa, Restorative,
Gentle, Yin Yoga & Beginners

background
After graduating from Tufts University in Massachusetts with a degree in International Relations, I continued my studies in academia and received my Masters in Mass Communications. However, as I journey through life I realize that practicing and teaching yoga fulfilled me much more than any other path. Yoga has changed my life, and I find great inspiration from my own practice and from my students. I began practicing yoga in 1996. I have studied extensively at Foothill College with Ben Thomas, a Senior Certified Iyengar teacher with over 30 years of experience. I received my teaching certificate in 2004. Recently, I had the opportunity to study in San Francisco with globally renowned restorative teacher, Judith Lasater at the Iyengar Institute in San Francisco and received my restorative teacher certification. I continue to study with Ben Thomas at Foothill College and attend yoga workshops throughout the state because I believe in the importance of knowledge and staying “fresh” in the discipline of yoga.

philosophy
Just be.

teaching style
I tend to draw upon many styles of yoga as I believe there is only one yoga and each style of yoga brings new understanding to the yogic path. I try to tune into the needs of each student whether it is building strength and flexibility or becoming more self aware in their own practice. I focus on alignment, infusing balance and creating space with each asana as, I consider, most injuries are caused by either being misaligned, out of balance or from a lack of space.
